A great timeout and about meeting and networking with other members of the floral industry.

As a member of the Society of American Florists (SAF), EMY Custom Flowers LLC had a great time meeting and networking with other members of the floral industry. (insert picture) Pictured: Sherry, owner and designer of EMY Custom Flowers LLC with fellow Famers who are members.

Growing up in Barbados Sherry knew it was great in the sugar cane industry. She had relatives who worked in the fields cutting cane and on the sugar plantations. It was important to her to hear the treatment of workers on the farms she love their flowers. She got to meet one of the farmers from Ecuador and heard about how employees are treated on their farms. Sherry said, “Choosing products from farms that care about the environment and its employees means a lot to us as a whole. We need to pay mind to that”

Really great meeting one of the farms our flowers come from.

Meeting other Black Flower Shops Owners

As a minority florist, for sherry, she feels the industry has come a long way. One main goal for sherry is to connect with florists of color and help build relationships with them in the industry. She recalls days where she couldn’t even walk into a flower shop and ask questions or tips about flowers. As she studied in the industry there were many times she was the only one of color in the class and she remembered days of other students not wanting to sit next to her when they grabbed their bag and tools and quickly moved.

Today there are some changes happening with more awareness. When she spoke to the Society of American Florist representatives at the convention they are interested in inclusiveness and supporting florists of color. She walked into the SAF’s convention and saw two faces looking like hers and she was excited enough to want to hug the young ladies right away. It is her hope to walk in and see more faces like hers in the coming future.

Today there are groups like Black Girls Florist www. blackgirlflorist.com growing to help many black florists in the floral industry.

Sherry loves meeting people and when she goes out to a new area she always looks to meet another florist. While in Maryland the Society of American Florist representatives connected Sherry with the owners of Lee’s Flower Shop. Lee’s Flower shop founded in 1945 is a proud black-owned flower shop run by the founder’s granddaughters. She walked away even more proud when she found out one of the owners was from Barbados.

Staci Lee opened her doors and arms and gave Sherry some inspiration to do so much in the industry. Sherry vowed to keep in contact with them for a lifetime. To the Lees -“Thank you for welcoming me with open arms and inspiring me. May you have many blessings, health, and love”- Sherry
